Privacy policy and cookies

This page explains my approach to privacy on our web site and how it affects you.

Key points:

This site collects anonymous statistics about your visit, for instance which of our pages you viewed.

Some 3rd parties including Facebook and Twitter may know you visited this web site, if you use their services.

I take great care to keep your private information safe. I will never share it with others without your express permission.

More details:

Measuring our visitors

I measure visitors to this web site using Google Analytics. This records what pages you view within our site, how you arrived at our site and some basic information about your computer. All of that information is anonymous – so I don’t know who you are, just that somebody visited our site.

The information collected from analytics helps me understand what parts of my sites are doing well, how people arrive at our site and so on. Like most web sites, we use this information to make improvements to the web site

Facebook, Twitter and other social networks

These services provide social buttons and similar features which I may use on this web site – such as the “Like” and “Tweet” buttons and links.

To do this I embed code that they provide and I do not control it myself. Social networks therefore could know that you’re viewing this web site, if you use their services.

Third party advertisers

This web site is displays advertising from third party advertisers and affiliate links such as Google Adsense, Hobbycraft and Amazon. As with social networks we embed code that they provide and I do not control it myself.

Advertising on this web site

If your details are dispayed on this site – paid or otherwise – I may record the specific personal information about you, such as your name and email address, that you give me. I may also collect and store information about your use of our services so as to improve them. I also log account and transaction history for accounting purposes, and to monitor any business activities.

Emails

I may send you email notifications regarding any service (such as entry confirmations or invoices) or which you have specifically requested (such as newsletters). You have the ability to opt out of any of this communication at any time.

I will never provide your personal information or email address to any third parties except where they are specifically employed to help deliver our own services, as detailed above.

Online payment

I use the 'payment provider' PayPal to bill for any products sold online directly through this web site. Paypal will have access to your personal and payment information. When paying by credit card, I do not ever have any access to your credit card details.

I share information with these companies only to the extent necessary for the purposes of processing payments you make via our web site.

Security

I take many precautions to prevent the loss, misuse or alteration of any personal information that I hold but I cannot guarantee the security of data sent over the Internet.

What about cookies?

Cookies are a convenient way to carry information from one session on a web site to another, or between sessions on related web sites, without having to burden a server machine with massive amounts of data storage. Storing the data on a server without using cookies would be problematic because it would be difficult to retrieve a particular user's information without requiring a login on each visit to each page of the web site

The cookie itself is a small text file that a web site saves on your computer or mobile device used to track data. There is a lot of concern about privacy and security on the internet. Cookies do not in themselves present a threat to privacy, since they can only be used to store information that the user has volunteered or that the web server already has. Whilst it is possible that this information could be made available to specific third party web sites, this is no worse than storing it in a central database.

Most large web sites now use cookies to help their site work properly, especially with navigation and mobile devices.
