Why is a greyhound called a greyhound?
There are several trains of thought as to how they got their name but know one really knows. Here are a few possibilities:
- It has been suggested suggests that the original Greyhound stock was mostly grey in colour.
- It may have been a corruption of "gazehounds" since they relied on sight rather than scent when hunting.
- Or they may have been called "Greekhounds" by the Greeks themselves or by the English as they may have entered England from Greece.
- Also the name could have been derived from the Latin word "gre" or "gradus" meaning "first rank among dogs", which related to the care exercised in breeding these aristocratic animals.
- And some people think it is from an old English term"Gre-hundr" or "Dog Hunter". The coat colour of a greyhound can range from pitch black to pure white and almost anything in between. There are several trains of thought as to how they got their name but know one really knows.
